I became involved in basketball at high school. The teacher was Australian, and she introduced me to the game. The school was pro-rugby and netball and when I left school it was very much pro-basketball. That exposure led me to play. Referee and coach, the game.

At high school as a senior member of the premier team we had to coach a junior team and learn how to referee. I also became a Coach Developer and enjoy assisting other coaches. In this game sometimes you must wear many hats and have managed teams as well I have sat the FIBA international score bench qualification.

I have been involved in the game over several years. It has evolved as time has gone past. Rules changes has allowed the game to become a spectator game from Olympics to the grass roots game. Athletes are stronger, quicker and have a high skill level. They are also masters of the game. Young athletes inspire to become elite athlete, or just love the social aspect the game brings.

The introduction of the 3×3 game allows for athlete empowerment and they control the tempo, physicality, and mental awareness of the challenging competitive environment this form of the game brings.

The women’s game has also been brought to the forefront and more exposure has allowed the game to thrive, however there is still more work to be done in this area especially at community level. Look to invest in women’s sport.

The game has allowed me to travel, meet new people and work with diverse athletes. I have played at a World Masters tournament, I have attended a world championship tournament and assisted at a year 3 & 4 competition. These events different but the same! People loving the game – basketball!

I have also had the opportunity to coach, my daughter over the years accumulating to watching her and the Tall Ferns win a bronze medal at the Commonwealth games.

I have been lucky and hopefully I will be able to look back and hope that I have given “forward” to anyone you wants to play this game – for the Love of Basketball.

Basketball has had a profound impact on my life outside the court in several ways:

  1. Community and Relationships: The game has allowed me to build strong connections with people from diverse backgrounds. Whether it’s fellow coaches, players, or parents, the sense of community and camaraderie is something I deeply cherish.
  2. Leadership and Mentorship: Coaching and developing other coaches have honed my leadership skills. I’ve learned the importance of effective communication, empathy, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. These skills have been invaluable in various aspects of my life.
  3. Travel and Cultural Exposure: Basketball has taken me to different parts of the world, exposing me to new cultures and perspectives. These experiences have broadened my horizons and enriched my understanding of the global community.
  4. Personal Growth and Resilience: The challenges and triumphs on the court have taught me resilience, patience, and the value of hard work. These lessons have translated into my personal and professional life, helping me navigate obstacles and pursue my goals with determination.
  5. Health and Well-being: Staying active and involved in the sport has contributed to my physical and mental well-being. The discipline and routine of training and coaching have kept me fit and focused.
  6. Family Bonding: Coaching my daughter and watching her succeed has been a rewarding experience. It’s strengthened our bond and created lasting memories that we both cherish.

Overall, basketball has been more than just a game for me; it’s been a source of joy, growth, and connection.
