Basketball started in Palmerston North in the 1930 & 40’s at the YMCA.
Then after a time a break way group started to play at the Pascal Street Stadium (now known as Arena 3) and this was the start of the Palmerston North Basketball Association (P.N.B.A.).
Then in 2016 the organisation officially changed its name to Basketball Manawatū; acknowledging the wider geographic area it serviced.
Over this time, it has promoted and developed the game across the wider region from Dannevirke down to Wairarapa in the East, up to Taihape & Marton in the North West, down to Levin & Otaki in the South.
Basketball Manawatū takes a leading role in the organisation of all basketball activities across this wide area.
We also have an excellent working relationship with Basketball New Zealand, the national body of our sport.
Since 2019 the organisation has employed a full-time General Manager to oversee the management of the association’s activities and implement programmes to grow player participation and improve standards.
And in late 2019 it has employed a full-time Competitions and Events Coordinator to administer the running and delivery of quality events & competitions, including our Reps and development programme.
Basketball Manawatū currently has one sub association (Levin Basketball) who deliver their fabulous programme in the wider Horowhenua community.
